Growing up is hard for everybody, but especially when you are different.
Even though the world has become more accepting of gender non-conforming children, many adults still believe that young transgender girls are simply ‘going through a phase.’ Some blame their parents for permitting what is called ‘cross-gendering behaviors’; others have accused modern feminism of creating a world where ‘biology’ doesn’t matter anymore. As a consequence, transgender girls and non-binary children, as young as four-years-old, are forced to fight every day for their right to be themselves. Their identities are always up for analysis and question, regardless of age, class, and ability, throughout their entire lives.
We at Heartspark Press believe in the potential for a better world. We believe that gender is unique to the individual, regardless of birth assignment, and that the only person who can determine one’s gender identity is the person experiencing it. As a result, we believe that transgender girls are girls, transgender women are women, and (C)AMAB non-binary people are non-binary.
Heartspark Press publishes illustrated storybooks and chapterbooks that center on the lives of transgender girls and gender non-conforming children.
Heartspark’s central mission is to create a body of work that affirms and acknowledges the trials, tribulations, and magic of growing up as a girl assigned male at birth, or something else entirely. While our stories are designed for children of all ages and identities, our goal is to create stories that transgender girls and (C)AMAB non-binary kids can see themselves within.
